I have created this Chanterelle Mushroom Sculpture by using a process called needle felting to shape wool. It takes many hours to create the shapes, and they are very firmly felted, each Mushroom has the detail of the gills underneath and also embroidery thread needled into their stems at the base to give the texture of soil and leaf mould where they sit on the ground and also a suggestion of the mycelium that grows underground. They each have a single wire in the centre so that they can be firmly held in the wooden base. I have also needle felted a little habitat for them to sit on, again using needle felting with lots of shades of green and brown. I have then added embroidery thread to give added texture to the ground around the mushrooms. The base is also handmade by myself using a piece of wood which I have decoupaged with tissue paper and then once dry I have painted it to give a textured, old appearance. I have then added a bronze effect metal label holder and placed a hand written and aged label showing the Latin and common names of the Chanterelle Mushroom. The base also has a felt base to protect the surface it sits on. Although I may make this sculpture again, no two will ever be the same. I hand blend all of the colours to get just the colour I am looking for and also blend the paints for the base to give a unique finish. The base measures approx. 15cm x 9cm and the overall height of the sculpture, including the base, is approx 15cm.
